about

Mary Martin’s inversions (1966) is eye catching because of its patterns; 96 polished steel squares, arranged on a black canvas in a systematic way that is mirrored from the middle of each row of 24. It inspired Simon's mind’s ear to be full of minimalist patterns that form the basis of Inversions. When at university, Simon was in a group called Beat System, playing works by Reich, Riley, Rweski and modern minimalists like Michael Gordon, David Lang & Jeff Brooks. He drew on the techniques he absorbed then to create this piece.

10 violins progress through a note row that reverses in the middle. The notes are numbered, each player plays 1, 12, 123 etc until they get to 18 then add one note to the end as they remove one note from the beginning of the row. Eventually they complete the sequence on a holding pattern. This is played in cannon causing a background of ever shifting but monochromatic music analogous to the black canvas.

Over the violin ‘bed’ the sections of the Orchestra undulate in volume and rhythm to create a miasma of varying perspectives intended to evoke a meditative mood in the listener, akin to the hypnotic state you can find yourself in when in front of Mary Martin's work.
