about

“A great inundating sea … nothing moves, it is not water or even ice, it is something static and dead.” Paul Nash’s ‘Totes Meer’ (Dead Sea) is a hauntingly still portrayal of a World War II aircraft wreckage site, informed by his own experiences of war.

Inspired by the ghostly atmosphere, the compositional process began by digitally stretching and processing recordings to create sustained, unsettling textures. These ambient textures became the backdrop to more harmonic elements - a simple piano progression and distant horn section capture the fallen grandeur and vast human sacrifice that the aircraft represent.

Nash talked of how the stillness of the planes became disrupted as he looked on - "they began to move and twist and turn as they did in the air". The calm of the opening themes is gradually washed away by a cacophony of sound. Instruments played through infinite reverb are combined with rising and falling tones that bring to mind the threatening sound of distant aircraft combat.

In a more reflective second half, softer textures and an echo of the opening piano motif return the listener to the eerie calm of Nash’s painting.
