about

Annunciation; The moment Mary receives the news she is to bear the baby Jesus Christ. Arthur Hacker's beguiling, mystical depiction of this well known event in the bible was the inspiration for this piece.

The music is set to the latin text ‘The Magnificat’, and begins in a state of paralysis, as Mary is dumbfounded by the news of her incoming fate. Passages of confusion mixed with wonder ensue as she tries to make sense of the news. The B section begins with a series of short vocal statements, inferring a dialogue between her and the angel messenger. Soon, Mary begins to embrace her destiny as instrumental forces take over; swirling noise loops, piano and synths underscore her deepening resolve. Other orchestral colours join in as her path becomes more and more clear, before a gentle climax highlights her new found strength despite being just a young girl. The piece comes to a close as the angel fades away into the distance, leaving a solitary contrabass to play out after Mary's encounter with the spirits.
